Release date

While Apple has yet to share the official release dates for this year’s iPhone launch, the company usually introduces the new iPhones at an event on a Tuesday or Wednesday in mid-September.

If the launch is scheduled based on the previous models, pre-orders could open on September 15, and shipments might begin on September 22. However, those vying for the iPhone 15 Pro Max might have to wait a tad longer, given potential delays for its complex camera components.

Model comparison

According to sources such as MacRumours, TechRadar and MacWorld, the iPhone 15 would likely boast a 6.1-inch OLED display (2532 x 1170 pixels, 60Hz), backed by the A16 Bionic chipset. Its camera configuration includes a 48MP main shooter, accompanied by the 12MP ultrawide and front-facing lenses. Additionally, it might offer 6GB RAM, up to 512GB storage, and a 3,877mAh battery. On the other hand, the iPhone 15 Plus is expected to magnify these specs with a larger 6.7-inch OLED display (1284 x 2778 pixels, 60Hz) and a beefier 4,912mAh battery.

Moving to the elite tier, the iPhone 15 Pro may feature a 6.1-inch OLED display (1179 x 2556 pixels) with an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 1-120Hz, powered by the A17 Bionic chip. Camera enthusiasts can also look forward to a 48MP wide, 12MP ultra-wide, 12MP telephoto (3x optical zoom), and a 12MP selfie camera. Furthermore, the Pro model may offer 8GB RAM, storage capacity up to a whopping 2TB, and a 3,650mAh battery.
Lastly, the iPhone 15 Pro Max - which may debut as iPhone 15 Ultra - is expected to dazzle with its 6.7-inch OLED display (1290 x 2796 pixels) and the same adaptive refresh rate as the Pro. Its camera set stands out with a 6x variable zoom on the 12MP telephoto and a dual-lens 12MP front camera. Expect similar storage configurations to the Pro, complemented by a powerful 4,852mAh battery.

Price

The upcoming iPhone 15 series might set a new bar in Apple's pricing. According to Taiwan-based outlet DigiTimes, rising production costs could see the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max priced $100 to $200 higher than their predecessors.

DigiTimes' forecast places the price of the iPhone 15 Pro at $1,099 to $1,199 and the iPhone 15 Pro Max at $1,199 to $1,299. If the estimations from Digitimes are correct, we can expect the following price range for the various iPhone 15 models:
• iPhone 15: Starting at US$790
• iPhone 15 Plus: Starting at US$899
• iPhone 15 Pro: Starting at US$1,090
• iPhone 15 Pro Max: Starting at US$1,299
There have also been reports that Apple could boost the capacity of its iPhone 15 Pro models compared to last year. The iPhone 15 Pro models could support up to 2TB of storage, which doubles the 1TB maximum capacity of the iPhone 14 Pro models. It is also speculated that the iPhone 15 Pro Max could be equipped with the company’s first 10x optical zoom camera and rebranded iPhone 15 Ultra.

Colours

The iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus are expected to share the same colours, just like they do each year. According to leaks and rumours, those colours will most likely be Midnight (a black shade), Starlight (a white shade), Product RED, and two new ones: light blue and light pink/coral.

The Pro variants might offer classics like gold, silver, and black, with a standout dark red hue. To sweeten the deal, Apple may also introduce colour-matched braided USB-C cables, as seen in the leaked pictures above.

Design

While bearing a semblance to its predecessor, the iPhone 15 is rumoured to flaunt the iPhone 11's curved edges, and the new Pro models will have a titanium body.

Another major highlight is the much-discussed shift from the Lightning to a USB-C charging port. Tech experts believe all variants would feature the Dynamic Island, effectively saying goodbye to the notch. Moreover, the iPhone 15 models could also be equipped with a more power-efficient OLED display driver chip manufactured on a 28nm process, allowing for reduced power consumption, ultimately leading to improved battery life.

Key features

When it comes to the core specs of the iPhone 15, there are some things we're almost certain of. For example, we expect the standard iPhone 15 to inherit the iPhone 14 Pro's A16 Bionic chipset, just as the standard iPhone 14 inherited the iPhone 13 Pro's A15 Bionic.

The inclusion of an A16 Bionic in the iPhone 15 should technically make the device feel snappier than the iPhone 14. The iPhone 15 Pro models might also house the A17 (3nm) chip.
Other upgrades to look out for in the iPhone 15 models are faster transfer speeds (thanks to the USB-C inclusion), enhanced battery performance, an upgraded Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip tailored for Apple's Vision Pro headset, and AI advancements, notably within the Health app.

Camera

Camera upgrades remain a focal point when speculating new iPhone features. Rumours suggest that the iPhone 15 will inherit the 48MP main sensor boasted by the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, rather than the 12MP main sensor used by the iPhone 14. However, the iPhone 14’s 12MP selfie camera will most likely remain in place on the iPhone 15.

Poised for major camera enhancements, either one or both of the Pro models would feature periscope cameras and the biggest iPhone camera sensors ever. The iPhone 15 Pro Max could even get a telephoto camera with a variable zoom lens.

iOS 17

Unveiled at WWDC 2023, iOS 17 introduces features like Check In, a journaling app, posters for incoming calls, an enhanced autocorrect function, StandBy mode, and a simplified Siri activation without the "Hey" prefix. iOS 17 is slated for a fall release and pre-installed on the iPhone 15.

Final thoughts

While official details remain under wraps, one thing is clear: if rumours hold, the iPhone 15 will overshadow the iPhone 14 in performance and features. Keep an eye out for more updates as we approach the iPhone 15's debut.
