What are cryptocarriers
Written by:
Telecommunications for the people are taking over. Traditional telecommunications led to wireless cellular communications, and now, we see crypto and wireless services colliding. Cryptocarriers are emerging to put power back into public hands and expand networks beyond the massive, expensive processes now in place.
In this article, we will explore traditional telecommunications, cryptocarriers and telcos bringing cryptocarriers to the forefront of the telecommunications industry.
Traditional Telecoms
Telecommunications, or Telecom, refers to the exchange of information over long distances through electronic means. Telecom essentially refers to any electronic exchange of information, including email, fax, instant messaging, radio, satellite, telephone, or TV. Of course, cell data over mobile networks is part of telecommunications.
Mobile communication features a wired or wireless infrastructure with high-capacity loading. Telecom is a capital-intensive industry requiring massive infrastructure. In the telecom industry, size matters, and infrastructure for traditional telecommunications is expensive. It is not surprising that technological advancements have brought along new ideas about telecommunications, and a revolution is occurring in the form of cryptocarriers.
Cryptocarriers
Like the more common term “mobile carrier,” cryptocarriers are essentially wireless networks operating differently than traditional wireless network services. A cryptocarrier is a marriage between crypto or blockchain technology and telecommunications with the potential to transform the telecommunications industry.
Blockchain is typically associated with Bitcoins because, initially, the technology was used solely for Bitcoin transactions. Since its inception, tech experts have imagined and developed more uses for blockchain technology. That’s where cryptocarriers come in – using blockchain technology for mobile networks to facilitate communications over a vast network.
A cryptocarrier is a decentralized wireless network for smart devices powered by cryptocurrency. The best active example of a cryptocarrier is Helium. The Helium network is built using Open Source technology and powered by Helium Blockchain.
A cryptocarrier network consists of hot spots capable of transmitting data over long distances through radio frequencies. In contrast to traditional Wi-Fi hotspots, Helium hotspots can reach 200 times farther and share bandwidth with nearby internet-connected devices.
FreedomFI & Helium
Helium's significant expansion into mobile communication was propelled by its recent acquisition of FreedomFi. With the crowdsourced software expertise FreedomFi brings to the table, Helium successfully accelerated its efforts with 5G cellular. FreedomFi and Helium have a history of working together to empower people to establish 5G cellular networks from their homes and communities. Helium refers to their cellular model as "People-Powered Networks" or "The People's Network." The official transition bringing FreedomFi and Helium under one umbrella helped establish Helium as a cryptocarrier.
Crypto Incentive - How It Works
A cryptocarrier marries blockchain technology, mobile services, and Bitcoin mining. For example, Helium uses a crypto incentive model. Purchasing a Helium hotspot and establishing it on their personal property for people to use in their area allows the hotspot owner to earn Helium blockchain rewards. The rewards are earned for providing and verifying the Helium Network and rewarded in Helium Token, HNT.
As part of the Helium network, Helium mobile is planning to offer an option for service subscribers to earn crypto tokens as an opt-in option in exchange for anonymous feedback about network performance. As "The People's Network," Nova Labs GM of Wireless, Boris Renski, explains the idea is to not simply provide a data plan but allow subscribers and owners to actively participate in improving and benefiting from the network.
Helium Mobile & T-Mobile
Helium Mobile gains even more credibility as a force in the cryptocarrier industry through its recent partnership with T-Mobile. Helium will boost capacity for their distributed wireless network on the T-Mobile 5-G network by working with them. The exclusive five-year agreement is scheduled to launch in 2023. With the deal, Helium will operate as a service provider with data plans starting at $5 per month for nationwide service in the U.S. Helium hotspots are currently in over 50,000 cities worldwide. However, this new agreement with T-Mobile is expanding its service potential, with Helium customers automatically connecting to the TMobile network when Helium cells are unavailable.
Telecom and Technology
Modern telecom faces significant business challenges. The telecommunications industry has faced revenue decline due to the many streaming applications available and major competition from various service providers. Digital transformation is inevitable.
Telecommunications must adapt and apply new technologies to existing technology, such as Mobile Edge Computing, the Internet of Things (IoT), and 5G, in a customer-focused, efficient way. In the same way that cloud computing revolutionised data, the telecommunications industry faces a revolution, including structural change. Cryptocarriers are part of that revolution, as evidenced by the recent Helium and T-Mobile agreement.
The rise of blockchain technology is happening and will transform many industries. Significant innovations in communications and data through blockchain technology make telecommunications a perfect fit for change and advancement. Blockchain brings transparency, security, and immutability to the telecom industry. All are welcome solutions to many of the industry's common issues, such as roaming fraud, dispute resolution, and privacy.
Leading tech companies are beginning to adopt blockchain technology, further solidifying it as a major player in the future of transactional services in everyday life.
