Despite its most recent algorithm update getting a fair bit of backlash for trying to be ‘too TikTok’, Instagram is still one of the most popular social media sites ever created. And it’s easy to see why; it has the ability to connect everyday people with their favourite celebrities and influencers in a way that’s unlike any other platform.
With the average Aussie spending around 10 minutes on Instagram every day, and the total reach of Instagram a huuuuuge 51.6% of the Australian population aged 13+, there’s no denying that the ‘gram is part of our daily lives.
But who exactly is fascinating Aussies right now? We find out in this list of the top 10 most followed Australians on Instagram.
10. Troy Sivan

YouTuber, actor, model and singer, Troy Sivan is number 10, with 13.3 million followers. Troy has appeared in movies including ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ and the ‘Spud’ film trilogy. He also made it to number 5 in the US billboard charts with his EP TRXYE.
9. Miranda Kerr

With 13.5 million followers, Miranda Kerr is in 9th place on the list of most followed Australians on Instagram. Born in Sydney, Miranda was once a Victoria’s Secret Angel, but now runs her own organic beauty range called Kora Organics.
8. Liam Hemsworth

Liam has a not-too-shabby 13 million followers and is the first of the Hemsworth brothers on the list. While soap opera ‘Neighbours’ might have kicked off his career, he’s since appeared in films including ‘Hunger Games’.

The first of the fitness accounts on the list, Kayla Itsines is a fitness trainer and book author from Adelaide. She founded the app Sweat with Kayla which has had over 30 million downloads since it was launched. We reckon her 14.9 million followers on Instagram definitely helped.

With a 38 million dollar fortune, it’s no wonder that Australian fitness guru and now fashion collecting designer, Tammy Hembrow is in the top 10 most followed Australians on Instagram. She rose to fame by documenting her 2014 pregnancy and return to fitness, and captured the hearts and follows of millions -- 15.4 million to be exact.
5. Iggy Azalea

Australian singer and rapper Iggy Azalea comes in at number five on the list with 16.5 million followers. Not bad really when you realise the account has only been active since 2019, after the ‘Fancy’ singer deleted her previous account following a nude photo leak.
4. Ruby Rose

The multi-talented singer and actress has a whopping 19.9 million Instagram followers. Most famous for her role in ‘Orange is the New Black’, she is a badass on the screen and in real life according to her Instagram bio which reads ‘Your friendly neighbourhood Badass’.
3. Kathryn Langford

With 28.8 million followers, Perth-born Kathryn Langford is best known for her role as Hannah Baker on the hit Netflix show, ‘13 Reasons Why’. She might only be 26 years old but she’s got herself millions of fans and has gone on to star in star-studded movies including ‘Knives Out’.

Over 30 million people have clicked the follow button for Hugh Jackman’s authentic Instagram account. Less Wolverine, more selfie, Hugh also posts video updates of his daily life. Combined, it’s a winning formula that keeps him firmly at number two on the list.

With a ‘whoa now’ 55.8 million followers — almost double that of Mr Jackman in second place, it’s not hard to see why Liam’s big brother is at number one on the list. With a mix of behind-the-scenes shots from his movies, promo for his fitness app Centr, and a few family shots thrown in for good measure, Chris has clearly got his Instagram game down pat.
The surprising fact about the most followed Australians on Instagram
What’s surprising about this list is that a few years ago we probably would have seen social media and Instagram influencers taking all the top spots. Now, there’s a transition to celebrities, with just two fitness influencers in the top 10.
So why exactly is this? With a rise in misinformation over the past few years, people have become more aware of what they listen to online, and the sources they trust. The fallout of this is that there’s been a big decline in trust when it comes to influencers.
Social media influencers came out last in a 2022 survey by Australia Talks research which explores Aussie’s growing concerns about misinformation and our ever-declining trust in traditional media. In the survey of 60,000 people, only 3% of Aussies trust influencers. Not good news for all those brands who rely on influencers for their marketing, huh?
We all know that social media is a fickle fiend, and it’s anyone’s guess what’s round the corner next. But for right now, the most followed Instagram accounts are firmly in the celeb realm.
