Everything we know about the iPhone 14

On September 7th, Apple debuted their new iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. While the phones won’t be released until September 16, pre-orders for the new phones have been well underway since September 9.

So, what exactly are the new features of the iPhone 14 and how does it compare to the iPhone 13? We’ve got all everything you need to know and more below!

What are the new features?

Before diving into each of the features, here’s a snapshot of some of the features of these new phones:

Emergency SOS via Satellite

The new iPhone 14 has a subscription service that allows you to make emergency calls with your phone even when you have zero service. It does this by connecting to satellites which then relay your location back to emergency services on earth.

Once you’re connected, you’ll be asked a couple of questions such as whether you’re lost, alone, or if there’s someone with you etc. to ensure that you’re connected to the appropriate service station to get you help.

You can also use this service even when you’re not in an emergency situation as you can utilise the satellites to share your location with your contacts so that they’re able to find you or know where you are.

You’ll get this satellite service free for two years with a purchase of an iPhone 14, and it’s not clear what the cost would be after that.

Major Updates to the New Camera

Who doesn’t love a good camera? The iPhone 14 comes with some great camera upgrades that’s sure to take some fantastic pictures.

Not only are the cameras better at recording in dim situations, but it’s also better at capturing vibrant colours. The front camera also comes with an autofocus feature so you can take clearer selfies even when each subject is at different distances.

Other additions include ‘Action Mode’ to help with stabilising the camera and reduce shaking when you’re capturing a video that has more motion.

This nifty little feature allows you to still see your notifications, time and widgets even when your device is locked and your screen is ‘off’. It does this while using reduced battery power so you won’t have to worry about your phone running low on battery!

Crash Detection

Similar to the new Apple Watch Series 8, the iPhone 14 will have a force sensor that can detect if you’ve ben in a car crash.

The sensor activates when you’re driving and can detect when you’ve come to a sudden stop, if there are air pressure changes, and a loud crashing noise. If detected, the iPhone will call emergency services for you if you’re not responding.

Fastest Internal Chips

Each of the iPhone models have upgraded internal chipsthat make these models the fastest iPhones so far.

Both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have an A15 Bionic Chip - similar to the iPhone 13 but with enhanced features such as a more powerful graphics portion along with better CPU and neural processors.

With the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, however, you’re looking at the new A16 Bionic chip that’s about 40% quicker than the A15. It also uses less power, so you’re looking at less strain on both the internal components of the phone along with the battery.

A redesigned screen with a new ‘Dynamic Island’ cutout

Yup, the iPhone notch is now gone - well, mostly because the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 plus still has it, but it’s no longer there on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Instead, it has now been replaced with a pill-shaped cutout called the “Dynamic Island”.

What the Dynamic Island is, is that it’s a cutout that now has the selfie camera and Face ID sensor. It’s also responsive so it’ll grow and shrink depending on the type of app that you’re using.

While some apps will display information outside of the Dynamic Island, others will house their notifications within the Dynamic Island.

New colours

Obviously, the iPhone 14 comes in some new gorgeous colours which includes blue, purple, midnight, starlight and red. The iPhone 14 Pro on the otherhand comes in deep purple, gold, silver and space black.

Getting the new iPhone 14
