How to airdrop from phone (without receiving unsolicited pics)

Ahhh… AirDrop.
The wireless file-sharing feature on Apple devices known as ‘AirDrop’ has some great benefits — but it certainly has its downsides, especially if you’re new to AirDropping and haven't quite figured out the do’s and don’t of this handy little feature.
For millions, AirDrop is the go-to feature for transferring images to other devices, but if you don’t set your device up with the correct settings, you could very well be picking up unsolicited pics that’ll make you want to drop your phone.

So, what is AirDrop?

Airdrop is a technology developed by Apple that allows users to share photos and other data between Apple devices that are in close proximity to each other. To use Airdrop, both people will need to enable the feature in their device's settings and ensure that their device is ‘discoverable’ by other Apple devices. AirDrop uses both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to establish a secure connection between devices to transfer images quickly and with greater quality than if you were to send them via a social media app.
Airdrop is super convenient and allows you to easily share high quality images and files with other Apple users that have the feature enabled without the need for cables or email attachments.
Sounds good so far, right? But, I think you know where this is going…

Unsolicited pics being sent via AirDrop

As with most technology, AirDrop was created with the best of intentions and is used by millions around the world for exactly the reasons it was intended. But, there are those among us with a few kangaroos loose in the top paddock and would love nothing more than to ruin your day (or the day of all the passengers on this flight to Mexico) with an unsolicited pixelated pic or two.
That’s right, whilst AirDrop is a great technology that many use for all the right reasons, users should be careful not to leave their phones exposed to receiving unwanted material.

How to avoid being sent unsolicited pics through AirDrop

To safely use Airdrop and avoid receiving unsolicited images, it’s important to set AirDrop to only receive files from your contacts.
This can be done by following these simple steps:
Step 1: Change Airdrop Settings
Step 2: Choose the Right Airdrop Option
Step 3: Confirm the Transfer
By doing these simple steps, only people in your contacts list will be able to send you files via Airdrop, reducing the risk of receiving unwanted content.
Remember, If you do receive unsolicited content via Airdrop, you can easily report the device by tapping on the "Report" button when the Airdrop request appears on your device. Reporting unsolicited content helps to ensure that the sender is held accountable for their actions and can prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
So now we’ve covered how to keep our phones (and our eyes) safe. How do you set up AirDrop on your iPhone or Android?

Setting up AirDrop on your iPhone

To set up Airdrop on an iPhone, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open the Control Center and tap on the AirDrop icon.
From there, choose either "Contacts Only" (recommended) or "Everyone" (proceed with caution!) to determine who can see your device and send you files. Once AirDrop is on, ensure the person you wish to send images or files to also has their Airdrop on as well as Bluetooth enabled,
You can then select the image you want to send and hit “Share” which is where you’ll find the option to send via AirDrop along with your contact’s AirDrop profile which will display as “Person’s Name iPhone”. Select the profile and your image will begin to share.

Setting up AirDrop on Android

As we’ve mentioned, AirDrop is for Apple devices but an app called AirDroid enables Android users to wirelessly transfer files (including photos) between devices iPhones and Androids just like AirDrop doe

Be safe out there, AirDroppers

Scientists are still trying to understand why certain people feel the need to bombard people’s phones with unsolicited pics, and they may never get to the bottom of it. But if used correctly and with the security features outlined above, AirDrop is a great feature that can save you a lot of time in transferring your precious pics and files to your nearby contacts.
