What is a more ‘equitable plan’?
Did you know that Australia still has a significant gender pay gap… in 2023! For the last couple of years it has sat at a whopping 22.8%, and while the most recent data shows some progress, we still have a long way to go. So we asked ourselves, what can we do? While we can’t change what all women get paid, we can account for the disparity - at least where mobile plans are concerned. So we have discounted our most popular plan by 22.8% for anyone who identifies as female.
Why are you doing this?
Because when we’re not ‘righting’ telco wrongs, we spend our downtime taking aim at other issues that impact our customers and the things they care about. The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is Embracing Equity and we wanted to go beyond what most companies will do - the nominal social media posts, maybe showing some of their female employees enjoying free cupcakes in the break-out room, well - we say that’s not good enough. It’s not got us very far, right?
Are all your female identifying employees paid equally?
Yes. This is enshrined in policy and advocated in practice. We pay people for the job they do and what they contribute. Additionally, we believe it’s important to be conscious of other factors that can lead to pay disparity, for example a period of time out of the workforce to raise children. At Circles, our focus is on contribution and achievement - not (sometimes) arbitrary measures, like tenure. As a company that is more tech than telco, we know we have a lot more work to do to encourage more women into areas like engineering and operations but it’s something we believe in.
What’s the fine print?
The offer sign-up period runs from 1 March 2023 to 1 May 2023 and the promotional discount is valid for 12 months. We hope that we can reduce the discount if we offer this next year, because the pay-gap has shrunk.
How are you policing this?
Other than the regular ID checks that all new business is required to pass (as per the Telecommunications Consumer Protections Code) we will not be requiring additional information. That said, we will not be dictating to anyone whether they are allowed to identify as female or not.
The gender pay gap is an oversimplified (and sometimes inaccurate) representation of the struggles women face for pay parity and the larger issues of workplace gender equality, heck, we can’t even agree on the number! Is it 22.8% or 13.3%, should it include part-time work or only full-time?
Regardless of how it is calculated (or when) there is a consistent gap in favour of men. It’s also important to remember that it is an indicator of women’s overall position in the workforce, representing how they and their work are valued. If you look at all the highest paying jobs, they’re all male dominated, while the lowest paying jobs (and those that are acknowledged to be grossly underpaid for the value they deliver (Teachers are Nurses) are largely roles occupied by females. This campaign is designed to start a conversation, it’s not a thesis.
Isn’t excluding men from this offer also discrimination?
No. We have no control over someone’s gender identity. That is entirely up to them.
